Long-Term Care Facilities

Description of Indicator
Nursing homes or long-term care facilities are available for older residents in the region and statewide. This indicator will show the number of licensed beds in nursing homes of each geography for every 1,000 residents. The daily room rate of facilities is shown by finding the average daily charge of semi-private rooms.

Why is it important?
The assistance that nursing homes provide for the growing older adult population becomes increasingly essential for maintaining their health and wellness. Older adults engaging in daily lifestyle behaviors with medical assistance and supervision support the high level of care they need while trying to maintain some independence. Given the region’s larger older population, this indicator is critical to the region’s future. Cost is also an essential component, as most individuals do not have long-term care coverage.

How is the region performing?
The number of nursing homes remained relatively consistent since 2018 in the three counties, although it started to decline after the 2020-2021 period statewide. The rate of licensed beds in Lackawanna County increased slightly in the 2022-2023 compared to the prior period. In the most recent year analyzed, all daily semi-private room rates are below statewide averages.
