Why is it important?

Nonprofit organizations are established for public or mutual benefit, distinguishing them from entities that generate profit for owners and investors. They promote initiatives aimed at the public good, providing means for individuals to take action and enhance their communities.

How is the region performing?

The region is home to approximately four percent of the state’s nonprofit organizations. The number of organizations does not correlate with population size; capacity and subject matter expertise are more meaningful. Most fall into the 501(c3) category, which encompasses 74.5 percent of nonprofit organizations in the region. These organizations typically serve the most vulnerable populations. Between 2020 and 2026, the number of nonprofit organizations decreased by about eight percent.
