Police Personnel

Description of the Indicator

This indicator details the numbers of police officers in full- and part-time positions in the tri-county area and the state. It includes municipal-level positions, along with regional and state-level coverage. This information is sourced from the PA Department of Community and Economic Development.

Why is it important?

Adequate police protection can lower crime rates, particularly when targeted in specific areas and types of crime. Low crime rates often indicate a high quality of life and may have significant economic development implications. The type of coverage is also important because it reflects the strength and sustainability of local public safety.

How is the region performing?

Most municipal police personnel in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wyoming County and the Commonwealth are employed full-time. Wayne County utilizes more part-time personnel than full-time personnel. In the four-county area, almost 40 percent of municipalities rely state police coverage only.
