Description of the Indicator
This indicator measures the number of households without a vehicle available. Access to a personal vehicle is a key factor influencing mobility, access to employment, healthcare, education, and other essential services.
Why is it important?
Households without access to a vehicle may face transportation barriers that limit economic opportunity and access to critical resources. Tracking changes in vehicle availability helps identify transportation inequities and areas where public transportation, walkability, or alternative transportation investments may be needed.
How is the region performing?
From 2000 to 2024, the number of households without a vehicle generally declined across the region and throughout Pennsylvania. Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties continue to report the largest number of households without vehicle access, while Wayne and Wyoming Counties remain substantially lower overall.
In 2024, households without a vehicle totaled 8,298 in Lackawanna County, 12,819 in Luzerne County, 1,435 in Wayne County, and 563 in Wyoming County. Pennsylvania overall reported 549,478 households without a vehicle available.
