Home Heating Fuels

Description of the Indicator
This indicator examines the types of home heating fuel used by residents.

Why is it important?
This indicator provides insights into the energy demands of the three-county region and the Commonwealth. The data reveal changing energy trends and correlate with the age of the housing stock.

How is the region doing?
As of 2023, at least half of the occupied housing units in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties (as well as the Commonwealth) used utility gas to heat their homes. Between 18.0 percent and 23.7 percent used electricity. Compared to the other geographies, the use of fuel oil, kerosene, etc., and bottled, tank, or LP gas was relatively high in Wayne County (32.9 percent and 17.7 percent, respectively). A total of 968 homes in the region have no heating fuel.
