Housing

Description of Indicator
All residents should have access to quality, attainable housing. The housing indicator depicts occupied housing units and housing cost burden across the region by race and ethnicity.

Why is it Important?
Historically, members of some racial and ethnic groups have suffered discrimination in buying homes and accessing home mortgages. A home is a vital financial asset for a family and an investment in both the local neighborhood and surrounding community. Attainable housing has far-reaching social and economic implications for communities.

How is the Region Performing?
Housing is the single largest expense for households and can leave too few resources to pay for other expenses. In 2020, in the Scranton-Wilkes Barre metro area, White owners were least likely to be burdened (21%), and Latino owners were most likely to be burdened (28%) at all income levels.
