Description of the Indicator
Human trafficking involves the exploitation of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion for commercial sex acts or involuntary servitude. This indicator tracks reported cases of trafficking-related crimes in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne Counties, and Pennsylvania. Data from the Pennsylvania Uniform Crime Reporting System provides insight into trends and regional variations in trafficking incidents.
Why is it Important?
Human trafficking is a serious crime and a violation of human rights that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations. Monitoring human trafficking cases helps law enforcement, policymakers, and service providers assess the scope of the problem and implement prevention and victim support strategies as needed.
How is the region performing?
While some counties report few or no cases, the statewide trends indicate that human trafficking remains a critical issue. In 2024 there were zero reports of commercial sex acts in Pennsylvania. In 2025, however, there were 54 reports of commercial sex acts. The fluctuations in data may reflect shifts in law enforcement priorities, reporting practices, or trafficking activity itself. Victims largely underreport crimes related to sexual assault.
