NSF

Description of Indicator
This indicator measures the amount of National Science Foundation (NSF) grants infused into each county annually. Funding is for math and sciences, biological sciences, geosciences, cancer research and genome research. Funding primarily goes to institutions of higher education.

Why is it important?
The infusion of capital into a region is an economic generator. It creates jobs and business opportunities that ripple through the economy (the multiplier effect). Funding from these sources also measure a region’s success in developing and maintaining an innovative economy.

How is the region performing?
In 2023, the region received over $4 million in NSF funding, an increase from the previous year. This total is the highest the region has received to this point. At the state level, however, NSF funding decreased slightly.
