Description of the Indicator
This indicator measures the number of grandparents responsible for grandchildren under 18 years old in a particular geography and time.
Why is it important?
Grandparents raising grandchildren often face unique challenges, including financial strain, emotional stress, and the need for additional resources. Data on this population helps policymakers and organizations understand these challenges and develop targeted support.
Furthermore, grandparents raising grandchildren may face difficulties supporting their grandchildren’s educational and emotional needs, especially if they are unfamiliar with modern educational expectations or methods. Educators and child development experts may use this information to create interventions, such as tutoring programs or parenting classes, to support grandparents and grandchildren in educational and developmental areas.
In some cases, grandparents may be raising grandchildren due to circumstances like parental incarceration, substance abuse, or other family crises. This data may highlight the legal needs of these families, including guardianship, custody arrangements, and access to legal resources.
