Description of the Indicator
The population overview trends the region’s and state’s population from 1990 through the most recent release year. It is sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, which account for births, deaths, and migration.
Why is it important?
Population estimates are used for state and local planning, resource allocation, and social and economic development. Policymakers and planners use population estimates for programs and allocations of services such as education and healthcare. Estimates are also used to measure health, well-being, and living conditions.
How is the region performing?
From 1990 to 2024, Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wyoming counties have seen minor fluctuations in their populations. All three are slightly lower today than in 1990. Despite some fluctuation, Wayne County and Pennsylvania experienced population growth since 1990.
