Description of the Indicator
This data set consists of the total population categorized by race and ethnicity. The data are sourced from the Decennial Census and the American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.
Why is it important?
By understanding the demographic composition of a population, governments can design programs and policies that specifically address the needs of historically marginalized or underserved communities. This can help reduce disparities in education, healthcare, employment, and housing.
Race and ethnicity data also provide insight into a population’s diversity and help foster greater cultural awareness and understanding. They can also support efforts to promote social integration and unity, recognizing the contributions and challenges different communities face.
How is the region performing?
Since 1990, the region and the state have significantly changed their racial and ethnic composition.
Both the region and state experienced the most significant changes in composition regarding people who are White, non-Hispanic, and Hispanic/Latino of any race.
