This indicator encompasses the percentages of households with wages, social security, retirement, and cash assistance incomes.

Why is it important?

Understanding how residents support themselves helps to identify an economy’s strengths and weaknesses and where support may be needed.

How is the region performing?

Over 70.0 percent of the households in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wyoming Counties earn wages, along with 65.9 percent in Wayne County. Wayne and Wyoming Counties have relatively large percentages of residents with social security and retirement incomes. Approximately three percent of the region’s population relies on cash assistance.
