Description of Indicator
This indicator measures the suicide death rate per 100,000 residents in the three counties and Pennsylvania. The rate of death is adjusted for age, and suicide is defined as causing intentional self-harm.
Why is it important?
The suicidal death indicator illustrates the disparities in mental or behavioral health resources. Higher mortality rates due to intentional self-harm can be prevented by supporting at-risk residents, such as those with a history of trauma and isolation.
How is the region performing?
The suicide rate from 2013 to 2021 has fluctuated in the three counties and Pennsylvania. Except in 2017 and 2020 in Lackawanna County, the suicide death rate has remained above statewide levels. The suicide death rate in Wayne County has been significantly higher, with the most considerable rates in 2016 and 2019 at over 30.0.
