Description of the Indicator
The age distribution indicator depicts the populations of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne Counties, and Pennsylvania, categorized by age group.
Why is it important?
Like other types of demographic data, information about age distribution is needed for planning and resource allocation related to education, healthcare, social services, workforce, infrastructure, and housing. For instance, a larger youth population may require more educational resources, and an aging population may demand more healthcare and senior services.
How is the region performing?
In 2023, the majority of the population in all analyzed geographies was aged 55 to 64. At least 20.0 percent of the population was 65 years or older, with less than 11.0 percent nine years of age or younger. Following national trends, Northeastern Pennsylvania’s population is aging.
