Description of the Indicator
The age distribution indicator depicts the populations of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne Counties, and Pennsylvania, categorized by age group.
Why is it important?
Like other types of demographic data, information about age distribution is needed for planning and resource allocation related to education, healthcare, social services, workforce, infrastructure, and housing. For instance, a larger youth population may require more educational resources, and an aging population may demand more healthcare and senior services.
How is the region performing?
In 2024, over one-third of the population in all geographies analyzed was aged 25 to 54. Compared to the state, all counties report a higher percentage of people aged 65 or older and a lower percentage of children aged 14 and younger.
