Migration

Description of the Indicator

The migration indicator details how many individuals flow in and out of each county. It could also be reported based on citizenship by U.S. or foreign-born individuals, with both domestic and foreign-born categories for migration.

Why is it important?

Migration is important because it affects population trends. It informs planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of policies and the allocation of resources to generate economic and social benefits. Migration affects labor markets and employment rates, and it may bring new languages, cultures, and customs to the region.

How is the region performing?

From 2010 to 2022, Lackawanna and Wyoming counties experienced net population losses of 3,896 and 1,691, respectively. In the same period Luzerne and Wayne counties saw net population gains, with Luzerne County of 2,421 and Wayne County at 3,886 individuals. The period from 2020 to 2021 yielded the most significant net gains for all counties with a total of 3,153.
