Older Adults Living Alone

Description of the Indicator
This indicator is a count of people aged 65 years and older who live alone.

Why is it important?
The number of elderly residents living alone is important because this population segment may need extra assistance to remain healthy and safe. Data on this group helps healthcare providers, policymakers, and community organizations plan for the delivery of health services, such as in-home healthcare, telemedicine, and wellness checks. Furthermore, loneliness and social isolation can be significant concerns for older adults living alone, leading to adverse mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety. Monitoring these data can help pinpoint where social programs, support groups, or community centers are most needed to reduce isolation and promote mental well-being.

Older adults living alone may face challenges in maintaining their homes, particularly if they experience physical limitations or financial difficulties. Data on this group helps guide policies related to affordable housing, accessible housing design, and the availability of home modification programs.
