School Enrollment

Description of the Indicator

This indicator examines public and private/non-public school enrollment from preschool through 12th grade. It includes the number of students enrolled in public schools and the percentage of students enrolled in public versus private/non-public schools.

Why is it important?

Examining both public and private/non-public enrollment provides a more complete picture of regional education trends. Changes in enrollment can affect school funding, staffing, facilities, transportation, and long-term planning.

How is the region performing?

From 2023-2024 to 2024-2025, public school enrollment increased in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wayne Counties but decreased slightly in Wyoming County. The share of students enrolled in public schools increased in all four counties, while Pennsylvania experienced declines in both its public school enrollment count and public enrollment share.
