Description of the Indicator
This indicator examines special education enrollments in the region. These enrollments are categorized by type of disability and reported by associated Intermediate Units.
Why is it important?
Special education is an integral component of the K-12 education system. It is also a good indicator of the number of children living with disabilities in the region and it can help ensure that appropriate resources are available to provide them with equitable learning opportunities.
How is the region performing?
During the 2023-2024 school year, special education enrollments followed a growing trend in prior years across all disabilities. Disability types involve learning challenges, speech or language impairment, or other health impairments. Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit 19, which includes Lackawanna, Susquehanna, and Wayne Counties, saw increases – the most notable increases being in the number of students enrolled with “specific learning disabilities” and those with autism. Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18, including Luzerne and Wyoming Counties, also saw an increase in total disabilities over the same time. The most notable increases in the region were enrollments in speech and language impairment and autism.
