Debt

Description of the Indicator
The county debt indicator depicts the total debt and debt per capita for each of the three counties in the region.

Why is it important?
This indicator points to the fiscal health of the three-county region. Understanding changes in debt per capita allows policymakers to understand the tax burden often placed on residents.

How is the region performing?
Lackawanna County has the highest total debt ($195,873,492) compared to Luzerne County ($166,095,000) and Wayne County ($23,823,250). Debt per capita measures total debt against the population, which indicates a government’s debt burden and current fiscal condition. Lackawanna County’s debt per capita is the highest among the three counties ($908), followed by Luzerne County ($510) and Wayne County ($465).
