Description of the Indicator
The government employee indicator depicts the number of government employees that Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wayne counties employ.
Why is it important?
Tracking government employment across the three-county region provides a snapshot of the workforce and an understanding of the local labor market. Furthermore, understanding the local workforce can help to better inform educational and workforce development programs and services.
How is the region performing?
The number of government employees in both Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties have decreased since 2015. Wayne County has experienced a slight increase in the number of government employees. Similarly, the number of government employees statewide has decreased since 2015. Across the three-county region, the majority of employees (approximately 63 percent) are local government employees, followed by state and federal employees (21 percent and 16 percent, respectively).
