Description of Indicator
This indicator examines the affordability of rental housing units in the region. Rental housing affordability is assessed by calculating rental costs as a share of the median household income.
Why is it important?
Rental affordability points to the ability of individuals and families to access safe, adequate housing. Housing affordability is critical to quality of life, and sustained housing is an essential factor in the social determinants of health. It also leads to better academic performance and worker stability.
How is the region performing?
Lackawanna County renters spent 29.9 percent of their incomes on housing in 2023. This 2023 rate is an increase of 0.8 percent from the previous year, an increase of 4.6 percent from 2000, and an increase of 4.8 percent from 1990.
Luzerne County renters spent 30.6 percent of their incomes on housing in 2023. This rate is an increase of 0.2 percent from the previous year, an increase of 5.4 percent from 2000, and an increase of 4.9 percent from 1990.
Wayne County renters spent 28.3 percent of their incomes on housing in 2023. This is a decrease of three percent from the previous year, an increase of 1.1 percent from 2000, and an increase of 1.9 percent from 1990.
Pennsylvania renters spent 30.3 percent of their incomes on housing in 2023 – a decrease of 0.1 percent from the previous year, an increase of 4.4 percent from 2000, and an increase of 3.7 percent from 1990.
