Description of the Indicator
This indicator captures traffic counts from permanent count sites. The local sites include Interstate 81 in Wilkes-Barre Township, Interstate 80 in Foster Township, State Route 307 in Newton Township, and State Route 29 in Eaton Township. Additionally, this indicator examines daily vehicle miles of travel, national highway linear miles, and average daily vehicle miles traveled per linear mile.
Why is this important?
Traffic and travel-volume patterns affect infrastructure demand. Increases in highway usage may require additional road maintenance, capacity improvements, or expansion of transportation networks.
How is the region performing?
Annual average daily traffic counts increased from 2022 to 2024 at all four permanent count sites. I-81 in Wilkes-Barre Township increased by 3.4 percent, I-80 in Foster Township increased by 6.7 percent, PA-307 in Newton Township increased by 0.5 percent, and PA-29 in Eaton Township increased by 1.5 percent.
From 2023 to 2024, daily vehicle miles of travel declined in Lackawanna County, Luzerne County, Wayne County, Wyoming County, and Pennsylvania overall. National highway linear miles also declined slightly in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, and Pennsylvania, while Wyoming County remained unchanged.
