Description of the Indicator
This indicator measures the percentage of the public using a specific transportation mode. Additionally, this indicator measures the percentage of the population working from home and the average time spent traveling to work.
Why is it important?
Understanding the public’s means of transportation reveals insight into many facets of the region, including environmental impact, employment dynamics, and transportation needs, which inform transportation planning.
How is the region performing?
Lackawanna County commuters who drove alone fell by 0.1 percent from 2021 to 2022 at 76.4 percent in 2022. Those who carpooled or used some form of public transportation decreased from 11.2 percent in 2021 to 11.0 percent in 2022. The population that reports working from home has steadily increased over time, increasing by 6.6 percentage points from 1990 to 2022. The county reported a total of 100,713 workers over the age of 16, which is 1,165 more than the previous year.
The percentage of the population in Luzerne County that drove alone decreased by 1.6 percentage points from 2021 to 2022. From 2021 to 2022, the total number of people who carpooled or used some form of public transportation increased by 0.1 percentage points. The number of workers from home has increased by 6.3 percentage points from 1990 to 2022. Walkers and those who used other means of transportation account for 3.9 percent of the population in 2022, an increase of 0.9 percent from the previous year but an overall decrease of 1.9 percentage points from 1990. The County has 150,800 workers over the age of 16 in 2022, an increase of 203 workers from 2021.
Wayne County reported that 78.1 percent of drivers commute to work alone in 2022, an increase from the previous year by 1.6 percentage points. Additionally, the number of people who worked from home from 1990 to 2000 increased by 3.1 percentage points. The county has a total of 20,812 workers over the age of 16 in 2022, an increase of 1,291 from the previous year.
