Description of the Indicator
This indicator measures the usage of different transportation types. It also measures the size of the population that works from home and the average time spent traveling to work.
Why is it important?
Monitoring common means of transportation reveals insight into their potential environmental impact, regional employment dynamics, and transportation-related needs to inform infrastructure planning.
How is the region performing?
The share of Lackawanna County commuters who drive alone has continued to decline, reaching 75.9 percent in 2023. Those who carpool or use some form of public transportation decreased from 11.0 percent in 2022 to 10.4 percent in 2023. The share of people who work from home has steadily increased over time, increasing by 7.8 percent from 1990 to 2023. The county reported 99,538 workers over the age of 16; this value is 1,175 less than the previous year.
The share of Luzerne County commuters who drive alone has also continued to decline, reaching 76.0 percent in 2023. From 2022 to 2023, the number of people who carpooled or used some form of public transportation decreased by 0.3 percent. The number of workers from home increased by 7.4 percent from 1990 to 2023. The county had 150,612 workers over the age of 16 in 2023, a decrease of 188 workers from 2022.
The share of Wayne County commuters who drive has also declined since 2020, reaching 75.7 percent in 2023. Additionally, the number of people who worked from home increased by 5.3 percent from 1990 to 2023. The county had 20,399 workers over the age of 16 in 2023, a decrease of 413 from the previous year.
