Description of the Indicator

This indicator measures the usage of different transportation types. It also measures the size of the population that works from home and the average time spent traveling to work.

Why is it important?

Monitoring common means of transportation reveals insight into their potential environmental impact, regional employment dynamics, and transportation-related needs to inform infrastructure planning.

How is the region performing?

The share of Lackawanna County commuters who drive alone has held steady at 75.9 percent in 2023 and 2024. Those who carpool or use some form of public transportation decreased from 10.4 percent in 2023 to 9.9 percent in 2024. The share of people who work from home has steadily increased over time, increasing by 8.3 percent from 1990 to 2024.

The share of Luzerne County commuters who drive alone has declined, reaching 74.6 percent in 2024. From 2023 to 2024, the number of people who carpooled or used some form of public transportation decreased by 0.1 percent. The number of workers from home increased by 9.0 percent from 1990 to 2024.

The share of Wayne County commuters who drive alone has declined since 2020, reaching 75.2 percent in 2024. Additionally, the number of people who worked from home increased by 6.5 percent from 1990 to 2024.

The share of Wyoming County commuters who drove alone decreased from 2023, reaching 80.6 percent in 2024. Those who carpooled or used some form of public transportation decreased by 0.8 percent in 2024. The number of people who worked from home increased by 4.6 percent from 1990 to 2024.
