Description of the Indicator
The indicator measures the amount of federal funding in the form of grants and cooperative agreements infused into each county annually. Funding is distributed to government, higher education, and non-profits for a variety of projects (depending on the federal agency).
Why is it important?
The infusion of capital into a region is an economic generator. It creates jobs and business opportunities that ripple through the economy to create more new jobs and more new business (the multiplier effect). In addition, many capital and infrastructure projects funded by federal dollars.
How is the region performing?
There were significant decreases in federal funding from 2021 to 2022. The decreases were primarily in grants and contracts, with direct payments, other financial assistance, and loans showing nominal changes.
