Description of the Indicator
This indicator measures the percentage of households receiving earnings, Social Security income, retirement income, and cash public assistance, along with the average dollar amount received from each source.
Why is it important?
Understanding how households support themselves helps identify the region’s economic strengths, income dependencies, and areas where additional support may be needed.
How is the region performing?
More than 70 percent of households in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wyoming counties receive earnings, compared with approximately 66 percent in Wayne County. Wayne and Wyoming counties also have relatively high shares of households receiving Social Security and retirement income. Cash public assistance remains a comparatively small source of household income across the region.
