Description of Indicator
This indicator measures the number of annual DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol) arrests reported.
Why is it Important?
Similar to tracking other crimes, including drug abuse offenses, tracking DUI offenses help us to understand law enforcement’s progress in tracking down and punishing offenders, but the substance issue is likely indicative of other societal problems.
How is the region performing?
DUI offenses do not have a clear trend in recent years. This is another area where COVID’s influence – both the pandemic itself and reporting issues – may affect an accurate depiction of the problem. It can be noted, however, that from 2022 to 2023, Lackawanna, Luzerne, and state offenses decreased by while Wayne County noticed a slight uptick. Each geography, however, remains a small portion of the total state DUIs.
