Description of Indicator
This indicator measures the number of fire departments and active fire fighters – volunteer, career, and paid per call.
Why is it Important?
Fire fighters help protect the public against many dangers by responding to fires and a variety of other emergencies. In addition to their primary responsibility to extinguish fires, they are frequently the first emergency responders to traffic accidents or other medical emergencies and may be called upon to treat injuries or perform other vital functions. The number of fire departments and fire fighters is helpful in determining a region’s emergency preparedness level.
How is the region performing?
Luzerne and Wayne counties fire fighters remain stable, but Lackawanna noticed a decrease in volunteers. Based on anecdotal evidence from local volunteer departments, finding and maintaining volunteers has been more and more challenging. This is another area whereby regional efforts can build and sustain a stronger public safety service.
