Fire Departments

Description of Indicator
This indicator highlights the number of fire departments and active firefighters—volunteer, career, and paid per call. The information is sourced from the U.S. Fire Administration National Fire Department Registry.

Why is it Important?
Firefighters help protect the public by responding to fires and a variety of other emergencies. In addition to their primary responsibilities, they are frequently the first emergency responders to traffic accidents or other medical emergencies. They are often called upon to treat injuries or perform other vital functions. The number of fire departments and firefighters is helpful for determining a region’s emergency preparedness.

How is the region performing?
The number of active firefighters in the region and the Commonwealth increased between 2023 and 2024. Lackawanna County’s number of volunteer firefighters remained stable, but the numbers for the other geographies decreased. Based on anecdotal evidence from local volunteer departments, finding and maintaining volunteers has become increasingly challenging. Regional efforts can likely help sustain a stronger public safety service.
