Description of Indicator
This indicator measures the number of offenses related to domestic violence (offenses against family and children).
Why is it Important?
Domestic violence is an ongoing problem and often endangers the lives of children, but also creates ACES – Adverse Childhood Experiences ─ that affect children into adulthood and the next generation. ACES can affect academic performance, employment, and long-term mental and physical health. It is important to note that incidents of domestic violence are vastly underreported, and many tactics of abuse are not readily recognized as crimes.
How is the region performing?
Offenses against families and children have varied over time. Despite the fluctuation, offenses in Lackawanna County, Wayne County, and the Commonwealth have declined since 2012. Luzerne County experienced an increase during the same period.
