Description of Indicator
This indicator measures the number of police officers in both full and part time positions. This includes municipal level positions, and police coverage in our municipalities.
Why is it Important?
Adequate police protection is synonymous with lower crime rates; low crime rates are often indicative of a high quality of life and may have significant economic development implications. The type of coverage is also important as it reflects the strength and sustainability of local public safety.
How is the region performing?
There have been some increases in full time officers, but more in part time positions. The concern regarding part time employment is retention during a workforce shortage. The new statistics do show an increase in regional police service which is a positive factor and a good move to long term sustainability. Conversely, the number of municipalities in Lackawanna County relying on state police coverage increased. A move towards broader regionalization will likely improve police coverage.
