Description of Indicator
This indicator measures the dollar value of National Science Foundation (NSF) grants infused annually into each county. Funding supports math and sciences, biological sciences, geosciences, cancer research, and genome research. Funding is primarily awarded to institutions of higher education.
Why is it important?
The infusion of capital into a region is an economic generator. It creates jobs and business opportunities that ripple through the economy (the multiplier effect). Funding from these sources also measures a region’s success in developing and maintaining an innovative economy.
How is the region performing?
Northeastern Pennsylvania received over $3 million in NSF funding in 2024, a decrease from the previous year. However, NSF funding increased slightly at the state level.
