These data cover grants awarded by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Grants are awarded through the SBIR program to promote federal innovation research and development.

Why is it important?

This information is a determinant of technological activity and expertise. Although state-level data provides a larger range than county and municipal data, the insight is still meaningful. The highest-ranking states are associated with higher levels of economic activity, large or flourishing metropolitan areas, and relatively large state populations.

How is the region performing?

In 2025, the fiscal amount of SBIR awards in Pennsylvania decreased for the second consecutive year while the number of awards decreased for the third consecutive year. The total number of awards in Pennsylvania has fluctuated over the past five years.
