Description of the Indicator
This indicator examines STEM employment across key industries in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties. It shows both the number of STEM jobs and the percentage of each industry’s total workforce employed in STEM occupations.
Why is it important?
STEM-based industries support innovation, productivity, and regional economic growth. Tracking STEM employment by industry helps identify where technical talent is concentrated and where future workforce development and investment opportunities may exist.
How is the region performing?
In 2025, the highest concentrations of STEM employment were found in Computer Systems Design and Related Services and Architectural, Engineering, and Related Services. STEM occupations accounted for approximately 52.0 percent and 48.0 percent of total employment in those industries, respectively. Several other industries employed large numbers of STEM workers but had much lower STEM shares because of their larger overall workforces.
